What Can I Do to Avoid Fall Allergies?

You know the saying: “Nothing is certain except for death and taxes.” Well, we’d like to add another item to the list—seasonal allergies!

Fall will officially be here in a few days, and we don’t know about you, but we’re pretty certain that fall allergies have already arrived. Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Knoxville shares some tips about how to cope.

How Common Are Fall Allergies?

Very! If you experience allergies during the spring, odds are you will also experience allergies in the fall. That’s because around 70% of people who react to spring allergens also react to ragweed, which is fall’s allergen of choice.

Ragweed begins emitting pollen in late August and will continue through September and October. But you don’t need to suffer this season—take steps to limit your symptoms.

Ways to Treat Fall Allergies

  • Remove clothing and shoes after spending time outside.
  • Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to keep allergens out.
  • Replace your air filter regularly to remove pollen that may have made its way inside.
  • Try an OTC antihistamine, decongestant or nasal spray to alleviate symptoms.
  • Talk with a doctor about prescription medication options.

Could My Symptoms Be COVID-19?

It’s possible since symptoms of fall allergies overlap those related to COVID-19. But there are some distinctions between the symptoms.

First, if you have fall allergies, you are much more likely to experience watery eyes and sneezing than if you have COVID-19. If you have COVID-19, on the other hand, you are much more likely to experience body aches, a fever, sudden loss of taste or smell, and diarrhea or vomiting.

How to Fend Off Illness

  • Wear a mask as directed to limit COVID-19 spread, which can also help prevent other illnesses.
  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds each time.
  • Disinfect surfaces and objects in your home, car, and office frequently.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who may be sick.
  • Limit time spent in crowds or large gatherings.
